b.supreme at the southbank centre

Following the success of last year’s B.Supreme, the annual festival at London’s Southbank Centre celebrating women in hip hop, the organisers have taken a little from last year and added some new flavour to improve this year’s formula.

The festival is split into three themed nights: UK night (Friday), international night (Saturday) and the battles and workshops day (Sunday), giving the chance to both watch and take part in happenings.

Mistakenly perceived as a b-girl event, 2010’s line up includes not only breaking and popping, but also the addition of a style TooMuchFlavour readers may have heard of before.

Friday night will open the weekend with an evening performance from the London Waacktitioners (the UK division of the Imperial House of Waacking), b-girl crew Flowzaic, the UK’s top female street dance groups and the debut of B.Supreme’s new company.

The Waackers, international cousins of the London Waacktitioners (see our waacking section for more information on the dance style) from LA will perform for the first time on a UK stage on Saturday night, introducing a new audience outside dance to the re-emerging disco dance.

Making sure the legacy of the dance remains, the Waackers and Waacktitioners will be taking workshops in the style, led by Kumari Suraj.

Also over from America is annual favourites Decadancetheatre from New York, and B-Girl Rokafella, who features in the documentary screening on Saturday, All the Ladies Say.

Beside the new acts and workshops taking place this year, the cyphers are open for anyone who wants to take throw down, plus exhibition battles between the international guests will take place on Sunday.

The Bonnie and Clyde battle also makes a return to B.Supreme since its pilot run last year - the only part of the festival that male competitors can take part, in two-on-two combination battles.

UK hip hop and garage emcee Ms Dynamite will be doing a live performance for free on Sunday, while the beatboxers Bellatrix and Grace will be perform a set on Saturday and Sunday with girls from SE1 United.

Helen Skelton, Blue Peter presenter, and Got To Dance winner Akai will also be taking place in the Bonnie and Clyde battle as part of a Blue Peter challenge, to be trained by Decadancetheatre...
