The first time I found out about Jonzi D's Hip Hop Surgery was when we were doing listings leaflets in March and looking for events to advertise. With the printing deadline looming and one last space to fill on the flyer, a message on Facebook announced "Hip Hop Surgery returns." A call to Jonzi's manager and the ad space was filled, the flyers could go to print.

While promoting lots of events, it's not easy to attend all of them, but I left my house to go to London and find out what the Surgery was about...

Upstairs in the Soho Theatre, an audience of about 50 were squeezed in to the stuffy studio. On that night I saw jazz lyrics become a drama piece. A breaker recite a monologue. A rapper playing the role of a single mother. And what hip hop means different things to people from different backgrounds.

What made the night stand out for me was some of the cast that night didn't know each other beforehand. Most of the work I saw was thought up no more than a week before the performance and there was a lot of deep stuff fitted in to the two or so hours.

When you go to The Surgery, you don't just go to watch, but to participate by feeding back on the work, thus playing a key role in developing the final piece, Jonzi D playing the role of compere and cross-examiner.

Whatever you see next Sunday will be a piece of original work, and after you have the opportunity to meet the people that took part.

Tickets to The Surgery are only £5 on the door, although seats are likely to be limited due to the venue size.

The event starts at 7.30.
