11 and 12 October 2009: The biggest event in the b-boy calendar returns to the Brixton Academy as the world’s mightiest crews, soloists, poppers and lockers compete for the title of World Champion 2009.

Top 9, 2008 B-Boy Championships winnersLast year, Top 9 from Russia were the winning crew, taking the title from Korea’s TIP (Teamwork Is Perfection) in an explosive final.

This year they’ll be defending their title against competitors both old and new from all over the world.

B-boys, crews and fans of breaking will descend upon Brixton Academy next weekend to see the biggest showdown of the b-boying world’s superpowers.

Coinciding with the World Finals are breaking workshops, battles, and the release of B-Girl The Movie on DVD - and of course, we intend to chronicle as much as we can!

The path to Brixton...

In case you need to catch up with the B-Boy Championships story, here’s a quick run through of the events leading up to the world finals...

Soul Mavericks are returning to Brixton again to represent the UK, having fought off their rivals in the regional heats.

Regional Conflict South

The start of this year’s events began at the Regional Conflict South in June. As usual, we were excited about it, but with Soul Mavericks having won the Battle of the Year UK qualifiers in April and facing many of the same opponents again, maybe the qualifiers for the south was obvious...

La Familia Crew

In all fairness though, everyone put up a good fight, especially by the semi finals, and we had to give it up for the underdogs, north London’s La Familia Crew, who always battle valiantly but have yet to get grace the floor on the world stage.

A week later, Regional Conflict North took place in Leeds to decide on the UK finalists...

Roxy, of Soul Mavericks

Qualifiers from north contended with south at the Regional Conflict Finals at the Islington Academy. Soul Mavericks made it to the finals - as did their ‘B’ team, Mavericks X. There could only be one winner. Even though this prompted accusations it was unfair, the judges’ decision is final.

Because of the size of Soul Mavericks, splitting the crew into two was DJ Renegade’s decision. In a telephone conversation with him last month, he explained it’s easier than calling them ‘Mavericks A’ and ‘Mavericks B.’ The reason why both are finalists? His answer was “Because they train.”

A good answer, but the shouts of unfairness from others is because the crew line up for the World Finals can be different to that in the qualifiers.

The finals are now around the corner. Asics, sponsors of the UK B-Boy Championships, have released a new range of trainers to coincide with the world finals. Developed with B-boy Mouse, the new Asics Sports Style and b-boy dance mat aim to help newcomers to breaking learn the basic moves. There’s even a video of Mouse promoting them in London!
